Units, Curves and SVG import

Switching to 2.8 is tough. So many things changed for no obvious reason. I just tried to go through a simple curve import workflow and turning that curve into a solid. And there are a lot of issues along the way.

1) Units
In 2.79 my Length was set to “Metric” and my Unit Scale to “0.01”. That allowed me to work in Centimeters so when I typed “1” that meant 1cm. When I typed “100” that was 1m and it was displayed as such.
In 2.8 when I type “100” now it’s displayed as “100cm” instead of “1m”. Even when I type “1m” it’s displayed as “100cm”. Why change the old way, which worked so well? I won’t even start with the “Adaptive” settings. This doesn’t work as excpected either. When I type “1” there, it’s seen as “1m” although my Unit Scale is set to “0.01” like in 2.79.

2) Curves
In 2.79 the surface of a Curve object was displayed as a solid surface as long as is still was a Curve object. This was easy on the eye and visually good to see. In 2.80 the surface is displayed with edges all over it which at this point don’t have any function other than being very distracting.

3) SVG Import
There are a few issues here as well.
First of all, I would add an optional checkbox to create a collection when being imported. In my workflow I’d rather not have a collection created along with the import. Eventually I will have to delete them all the time.
A bigger issue is about the units here. I have to scale my imported curves up by about a factor of 100. After that I apply the scale. This seems to be ignored somehow although the “Scale” fields show a value of 1. In the image below you can see two curves of about the same size with an extrusion and offset of 1cm. The tiny grey one is a Circle created in Blender, the big messy object is an imported SVG curve. As you can see, there’s something wrong with the scale here.

Maybe the developers can add these things to their list. It’s back to 2.79 again for me.

No interest in this topic?

I’ll just bump this one every few months. I just stumbled over the Curve display issue (Point 2 above) again. Any suggestion how the annoying triangulation can be deactivated?
