Subdivide smooth algorithm different than the one in the modifier panel

Hi, I noticed that I can’t apply subdivision to an object in the same way I do with the subD modifier.

As you can see when I have smoothness set to 1.0 the result is quite different. (the model on the right has a modifier applied while on the one to the left I used the subdivide in the edge panel).

The problem is that I can’t apply the modifier as I have many instances of that object and Blender doesn’t allow me to apply any modifiers because of that. So I am stuck.
