I am wondering if it’s known when the panoramic camera projection might make it’s way back into Blender 2.8?
It’s still there, but not supported by Eevee yet.

This is a must for vr production. Not been a raytracer renderer, Eevee can not bend light rays the same way as Cycles. We need special shaders or some tricks.
For mono panoramas, it is not a real problem. We can render with Eevee a cube based on 90º cameras (take care of screen space effects with new “Overscan” option). But for stereo it is not so simple.

Actually it still works if your scene is in Cycles mode.
