Blender Crashing on Export of Project; how to Diagnose?

Hello,

My project is suddenly crashing in Blender when I export it. No idea why. The rough part is, I have no idea how to check what it might be. If Blender is blinking out (CTD) to desktop, no crash windows appear. How might one find out what is going on that would crash it? If… if that is possible.

I could just start exporting groups and see what group is crashing it, but it would be nice to find the exact cause, if possible. Might save me a day or two.

Hi,

As far as I know, it’s a good idea in those cases, to startup blender via the TERMINAL.
This way, when blender crashes, Terminal will still be open and report some errors. Those errors can be reported by restarting blender and click the “Report a Bug” under the Help menu & pasting the errors from the Terminal window. Fill out the form to give better hints on what you did and how to reproduce and maybe the blend file. Blender version etc. will be in the report automatically when hitting the report a bug button.
Start copy the error Terminal lines from where you start blender. (example for MacOS: open -n /Applications/BLENDER/Blender ).

Hope that helps a bit further.

PS: Copy the link from the bug report website you generated, to check on it.

Hello Nurb2Kea,

Thanks for the input. I tried to figure out Terminal and just couldnt understand it. I do have Console in the windows version I have. I also do not ‘install’ Blender but run it from a folder on a drive. I try to update the Alpha series Builds daily, so I have learned to just run them from their folders. That said, I do not know if Terminal could help as I am out of the App’s folder for Windows.

If I try to run Console, it seems to dominate the system, overriding the screen. At least that is what I have found. Maybe there is a way around that.

Also… Update… I can export sections of the model, but not all at once. But yet they export fine in sections.
All RAM appears fine, all 36GB.
This is happening on Blender 3.2 and Blender 3.3, latest builds and past builds back to April 27th. A very mysterious issue. Note, it was working fine back in April 27th through 29th Builds. I didnt check it on Build 30th at the time. Weekend… .

https://docs.blender.org/manual/en/latest/advanced/command_line/launch/windows.html

That’s all I can say for Windows console.
But anyways, you can file a bug report and tell the dev. what you do and what doesn’t work. They will look after it and give you instructions on how to proof that. There is also a crash log file that get written, but I don’t kow where for Windows.

Google a bit for the “blender crash log file path windows” maybe there is something.
(I ditched many years ago windows, because of that issues it creates with everything.)

Many thanks. Very much appreciated. Will do.

I found my crash logs… I was comparing settings with Blender 3.1 to 3.2, and noticed a setting in Preferences for TEMP folder. I then went there and parused the massive amount of temp files there and bamm… I found some files with project names (saved scenes) that have the word ‘crash’ at the end. I thought they would be named test.crash.txt according to the manual, but no… It is the saved scene name with crash in it.

Here is one from Blender 3.2;

There were quite a few. I have been working hard for a week to restore my project to where it can be exported again. Last night, I finally got 3.1 to work with an older SDK. So I can no longer run Blender 3.2 for now, nor 3.3. I was sooooo looking forward to checking out 3.3. Depressing…

Well,
I’m pretty sure you’ll get there.
Just file a bugreport via the help menu, and include the logs as files. Don’t paste it in the bugreport.
Text files will do.
Make sure your PC setup and hardware is listed there incl. the build numbers from blender that don’t work for you.
They will take care of it. I can’t help I have no idea about windows stuff anymore.

Already done. I filed the bug report a couple of days back, and today I was able to find the crash files.

A friend of mine took a look at it. N-key wasnt bringing up the right side vertical tools window. He investigated some more, an error in the Console in the window 1 view. He then did a Ammend to all Containers to a new file and Voila, its working and exporting again, from 3.1 to 3.3.

woo hoooo! Happy Ending.

Sounds good.
Propably a good idea to go to the bug report site you created, and write the solution there, so the dev. don’t need to look further.
And can mark it as resolved!

Roger and yep, already did that first thing.
