2025-03-13 Pipeline & I/O Module Meeting

USD

  • Some patches are still awaiting for review.
  • Jesse has started working again on the Mesh Sequence Cache.
  • Charles is waiting for work in the viewport to be able to integrate Hydra rendering, before he resumes hiw work on USD instancing.

Other

  • FBX: UFBX import: Aras got back to it this week, many armature animations are working now, but there are still some issues. Could be a good candidate for 4.5, as an experimental feature.
  • SmoothGroup export:
    • Bastien made change to internal implementation to make the generated smooth groups more usable by the external DCCs depending on it. There is a PR to add this feature to the FBX exporter.
    • OBJ: So far this format was the only one exporting smoothgroups. Bastien and Aras agree to just update it to the new behavior, since existing ‘bitflag smoothgroup’ do not seem to be actually useful. Bastien will make a PR.
  • Jean-Silas briefly presents some ‘small scale’ demo case of using Blender to export assets in a game-oriented pipeline, including the blendfile and an extension. He also mentions a recent experiment by Intel, using Blender to generate a huge rain-forest terrain.
