USD
4.4 Targets
- Scene scaling I/O: still WIP, Charles is trying to find time for it.
- Scene instance export: alternative PR submitted by Micheal J., review is on-going.
- Jesse worked on displacement support for SurfacePreview and MaterialX, there are still some open topics regarding compatibility.
- Jesse also worked on export of animated volumes.
Instancing
- Charles agrees with the idea to integrate the USD instancing project as an initial step towards a more generic ‘Collection Import’ feature.
- For the viewport rendering, current idea is to composite results from EEVEE/Workbench with the output of an hydra delegate for the USD instances. Charles will get in touch with Sergey Sharybin to discuss technical details.
Other
Michael J asks if there are plans or discussions about adding some support to import Gaussian splats (some form of photogrametry generating point cloud, similar to NeRF) in Blender (either from PLY files, or the in-progress support being worked on in USD).
https://www.aras-p.info/blog/2023/09/05/Gaussian-Splatting-is-pretty-cool/
There are some experimental extensions for Blender already, like the 3D Gaussian Splatting Blender Addon.
Importing this data as a point cloud in Blender is likely simple, but actually making it usable in renders or the viewport is more involved, and not currently actively worked on by the Blender project.
