Texture painting overhaul - any plans?

Hi all!

When will texture painting get an overhaul? It’s not mentioned on roadmap, that’s why I ask.

It misses option so brush follows surface. Is has been implemented in vertex and sculpt modes as “Falloff Shape: Sphere”. This feature is requested here: https://blender.community/c/rightclickselect/Vhbbbc/ Pablo Dobarro started to implement this but looks like it hasn’t been finished: https://developer.blender.org/D6385

There are also improvements by Pablo Dobarro waiting for review: https://developer.blender.org/D8377 https://developer.blender.org/D5697

Texture paint has also problems when I paint interiors. When angle between face and camera is very shallow and/or camera has large fov blender leaves some faces unpainted. Blend file here: https://filebin.net/zdkd6t33he1e7kkn

I wish too but the current mode has some design flaws that would not give new features a great performance. The overhaul is planned but postponed to unknown when other things are finished.

I really dislike that there are many areas of Blender where development is awaiting “Design” decisions to be made in order to start development, but there are no actual work being made on designing them. (and it is also not clear, who should be responsible for designing in the first place - Users, or Devs)

Like, why say that stuff like particles or texture nodes are “end of life” if we don’t have any idea what to replace them with and there is no work being done to find out the design.

Of course, every user can submit his own proposal, but in the end the decisions are ultimately for the devs to make, but they seem to wait for the design to be clear first. This way there is this never-ending loop of features that are stuck in a limbo.
