Blender Reel

They wrote in the comments:
“I’ve used Blender on a bunch of movies myself, things like “Life of Pi”, “Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters”, “R.I.P.D.” and Netflix’s “The Prom”, along with tons of TV shows like “Agents of SHIELD”, “The Orville”, “The Walking Dead”, “Lucifer”, “Pennyworth”, “Swamp Thing”, “Station 19”, and so many more. Blender is out there! :)”

which is from tangent animation

I don’t really get why companies should shout out Blender every time they might have used it.
A software can be used in many ways. When someone sais he used Blender on X project but doesn’t specify how, it can be anything. I know some people in the animation industry who used Blender in some productions, and it was very varied. Sometimes it was used very sparsely for a quick remeshing, sometimes it was used as a storyboard/animatic tool, sometimes someone did some UVs for a model or two, …
I know a bunch of animators used Blender to render some quick animation previz since Eevee came out and Alembic got a bit less buggy.

But except for a few exceptions like Tangent Animation, I have rarely heard of Blender being the backbone of a pipeline nor the major role at a specific task. So far it seems mostly used as a one-shot task by some isolated people, the same way some dude just does its UVs in 3DS in a studio mainly on Maya just because he’s more used to 3DS.

I don’t think it’s like Blender is yet a major part of a pipeline in a consequent amount of productions. And even when it is, companies are not always paid for the time their employees spend on doing advertisement for the tools they use, they don’t have to make announcements about their pipeline and it is in fact sometimes considered under NDA.

By the way, considering how most of the job posts from Tangent Animation were about hiring people competent using Maya and Houdini, I don’t think it is a safe bait to claim Maya and the Three and following productions as Blender-made productions unless they declare it so.

Several years ago people would mention BMD products with the same phrases as toys for hobbyists, at least for their cameras.

For the past few years Blackmagic Design has an entire section on their homepage about which big productions use their gear.

No one doubts their “street cred” now. Even the biggest studios use the software and hardware.
I’ve literally been on the set of Queen of the South here in Dallas and seen BMD cameras being used as A cameras for that show. Countless other stories of big production using BMD’s gear.
Marketing is extremely important; you can go from having a “Toy/Hobbyists” reputation to being one of the big players.

Yes, Maya and the Three was made using Blender (and others tools I suppose for texturing and so on)

As you said, avorted productions were using Maya and Houdini. This change of pipeline seem to have been one part of the many problems which cause the shutdown.

See first comment :

Tangent had recently completed work on Maya and the Three under the direction of Jorge Gutierrez. Work was completed exclusively using Blender and a generic windows based pipeline. Once audiences see what was produced this story will become even more difficult to swallow. It’s truly epic in scale, quality and polish. A testament to the artists who rallied behind Jorge and his vision. In Tangent’s blind hunger to grow and take on additional work (Monkey King and HITC) they decided to throw the baby out with the bathwater, abandoning Blender, aside from some Modelling tasks and build a ground up USD pipeline based on Maya and Houdini. This was started on day one of production on Monkey King. One might guess how this all worked out. Production deadlines came and went all while artists were still waiting on basic tools to be built. Cohesion between Maya and Houdini was never resolved as deadlines evaporated. This along with a client that was unable to lock a basic script lead to what seemed to be total loss of faith from Netflix
