2025-06-24 Render & Cycles Meeting

Attendees

  • Lukas Stockner (Blender)
  • Nikita Sirgienko (Intel)
  • Michael Jones (Apple)
  • Patrick Mours (NVIDIA)
  • Sahar A. Kashi (AMD)
  • Thomas Dinges (Blender)
  • Xavier Hallade

Notes

  • Lukas: Working on expanding thin film to metallic and other BSDF.
  • Xavier:
    • Worked on performance improvement of the barbershop scene.
    • Noted that perhaps the performance impact of the recent random walk changes need to be more clearly noted. There is measurable drop in the benchmarks.
  • Thomas: if libraries update needed: fill in the info in the Library changes for Blender 5.0 task.
  • Nikita: working on bug fixes for 4.5:
    • Double GPU execution causing crashes in some configuration.
    • Ubuntu 25 issue: some package is not in the proper state.
  • Sahar:
    • was not able to reproduce the Linux issue so far
    • HIP-RT 3.0 is ready, but needs new SDK. Might become available after the July 22 (current deadline for the libraries update).
      • WOuld be good to give heads-up to the platform team now.
      • If the update can happen without too much involvement from platform team then as long as it happens prior to Beta we are open to it,
  • Michael:
    • PR with binding model simplification. Requires macOS 13.
      • It might be fine since Blender 5.0 is close to 2026 for which VFX Platform is on macOS 14.
      • If supporting macOS 12 is an easy few liner that will make it much easier to land the changes.
    • Issue with ghosty objects in viewport: repro steps changed, need to have a second look.
  • Patrick: linear curves patch was tested on all platforms.
