2025-04-24 Compositor Meeting Notes

Attendees

  • Omar Emara
  • Habib Gahbiche

Roadmap

  • Unify node editors:
    • Common nodes have been added to the compositor. The topic is now closed, though a devtalk feedback thread about smaller workflow issues is still open.
  • Options as inputs:
    • Omar is making good progress. Meeting with artists at the studio is planned to finalize some remaining decisions. Thanks everyone for the feedback so far!
  • Simplify compositing
    • Reusable node trees: issues with forward and backward compatibility are resolved, we can continue with targeting the change for 4.5

Notes

  • Small UI changes were made to unify the behavior and look of the viewer node between geometry nodes and the compositor
  • Removing alpha option from Viewer and Composite nodes: will be a breaking change in Python. Will discuss again with the Core Module for final decision.

Practical Info

This is a forthlightly video chat meeting for planning and discussion of the Compositor in Blender. Any contributor (developer, UI/UX designer, writer, …) working in this area in Blender is welcome to join and add proposed items to the agenda.

For users and other interested parties, we ask to read the meeting notes instead so that the meeting can remain focused.

I don’t know if this is the proper place to suggest this but could there be change the behavior of Composite and Viewer Node?

I strongly feel that Composite node should act as Viewer node by default and if the user needs different View, then there should be View Override which then forces the view instead, otherwise the workflow is the same.

It’s more convenient and less confusing to the new users, they will no longer be confused why the view is not showing up, while not alienating power-users and saves whole bunch of un-necessary mandatory clicks.
