2025-03-27 Compositor Meeting Notes

Attendees

  • Andy Goralczyk
  • Pau Homs
  • Omar Emara
  • Habib Gahbiche

Notes

Roadmap:

For the short term, the focus remains on the two topics:

  • Unify node editors
  • Simplify compositing

We defined the topic I/O improvements to be worked on next.

Ongoing topics:

  • GSoC

    • Several compositor proposals are being submitted.
  • Reusable node trees

    • Current idea is to expose the Scene parameter as a new socket type “Scene”, and the View Layers as a Menu socket. This seems to solve the issues we discussed so far.
  • Reusable nodes:

    • Boolean Sockets are merged
      • Supporting further socket types like string sockets is now easier
    • Texture nodes are merged
    • Initial feedback on new nodes:
      • Looking into how users are creating node trees. Might need to introduce a new node to sample an image to address user feedback
    • Two remaining nodes:
      • RGB colors
      • Separate color
    • Nodes specific to compositor won’t be tackled in this release.
  • GPU support for denoising:

    • Omar is working on it
  • 5.0 Breaking changes

    • Exposing options as inputs should have priority for 4.5. because of breaking Python backward compatibility
  • Hiding nodes: Some concern was shared that hiding the node tree might become confusing. Andy suggested to hide the node tree only when a slider is being dragged. Habib will create a mockup.

  • Known Issues:

    • 4.4 release issues have been fixed and will be back ported for the corrective release.

Practical Info

This is a forthlightly video chat meeting for planning and discussion of the Compositor in Blender. Any contributor (developer, UI/UX designer, writer, …) working in this area in Blender is welcome to join and add proposed items to the agenda.

For users and other interested parties, we ask to read the meeting notes instead so that the meeting can remain focused.
