2025-03-13 Compositor Meeting Notes

Attendees

  • Andy Goralczyk
  • Simon Thommes
  • Omar Emara
  • Habib Gahbiche

Notes

Roadmap:

For the short term, the focus remains on the two topics:

  • Unify node editors
  • Simplify compositing

Ongoing topics:

  • Image Info Node
    image
Andy and Simon tested the patch together with the new procedural nodes and confirmed this is what they expect.
Decision: node looks good. Parameter “Size” should be renamed. Omar will make a proposal that is consistent with other parts of Blender.
  • Reusable node trees
This is being discussed as part of simplifying the compositing workflow. We discussed the implications of being able to link and append the render layer node and the cryptomatte node. We discussed the ideas of having a default Scene and View Layer, as well as exposing Scenes and View Layers as sockets
Decision: No concrete decision yet. Habib and Omar will look into the implications of decoupling the Scene and View Layer from the compositing tree. In the short term, the focus should remain on making the proposed simplified compositing workflow work, and not on appending and linking use cases.

Misc tasks:

  • Canvas & transforms: closed and opened a task for the remaining target #135926
  • Render passes in the viewport: Eevee support is done. For Cycles support, the work should be done in the Cycles module.
  • GSoC: we will add two new ideas for the compositor: Regression Testing and Performance Testing.

Practical Info

This is a forthlightly video chat meeting for planning and discussion of the Compositor in Blender. Any contributor (developer, UI/UX designer, writer, …) working in this area in Blender is welcome to join and add proposed items to the agenda.

For users and other interested parties, we ask to read the meeting notes instead so that the meeting can remain focused.
