2025-02-27 Compositor Meeting Notes

Attendees:

  • Andy Goralczyk
  • Simon Thommes
  • Omara Emara
  • Habib Gahbiche

Notes:

Roadmap:

We are still working on the two short term topics:

  • Re-using nodes from other editors
  • Simplifying the compositor

Topics:

  • Fields in the compositor:
We discussed whether the concept of fields in geometry nodes is beneficial for the compositor as well. There was no agreement about the benefits, especially after nodes such as texture nodes and image info node (see below) are implemented.
    • Decision: Move on without fields for now. Define the use case for fields and why are they useful (Simon and Habib)
  • Image info node:
General feedback from Andy and Simon is the node is generally useful but currently does too many things. Inconsistencies with geometry nodes were also raised such as the size output being a vector and not two integers (width and height).
    • Decision: split the node, give more detailed feedback once the other nodes are implemented and the overall workflow with this node is more clear (Omar)
  • Reusable compositor node trees: Feedback from Andy and Simon is this is generally desired and what they expect. We discussed some limitations such as linking a render layer or cryptomatte node that don’t work yet. Implementation will take a bit longer to solve these issues.
    • Decision: since the goal is to simplify the compositor workflow, we will move forward with a simpler solution that is only a UI change and not a breaking change (see 135227) (Habib)
  • ID Caching invalidation: Sergey, Clement and Omar are involved. Omar will pick it up after the current topics are done.
  • Winter of Quality: We are still planning to finish the task. The community is also welcome to help (see also Winter of Quality column in the roadmap for good first issues)

Practical Info

This is a forthlightly video chat meeting for planning and discussion of the Compositor in Blender. Any contributor (developer, UI/UX designer, writer, …) working in this area in Blender is welcome to join and add proposed items to the agenda.

For users and other interested parties, we ask to read the meeting notes instead so that the meeting can remain focused.
