2024-05-28 Render & Cycles Meeting

Attendees

  • Brecht Van Lommel (Blender)
  • Weizhen Huang (Blender)
  • Sergey Sharybin (Blender)
  • Xavier Hallade (Intel)
  • Nikita Sirgienko (Intel)
  • Christophe Hery (Meta)
  • Lukas Stockner (Blender)

Notes

  • For 4.2:
    • There are 3 high-priority reports:
      • The HIP-RT memory leak will likely be pushed back, as it requires fix from the SDK
      • The performance regression on AMD macOS will be looked at a later stage, after all major changes to the kernel has landed.
    • There is a number of libraries updates pending
      • Nothing to be done from Cycles developers side, platform maintainers will take care of the updates
    • Lukas thinks the blue noise patch will be ready before bcon3.
      • The plan is to enable it by default, and revisit if there is clear case where it does not work good with denoising is reported.
    • Nikita is looking into GPU denoising while using CPU for path-tracing. PR should be ready for review soon.
  • On-going:
    • Lukas was handling all sort of numerical issues in light sampling. Fun!
    • Lukas looked into solid angle sampling for disk lights. It does not work that easily or great for ellipsis. Is something interesting, but probably not at the top of the priority list at this time.
    • Weizhen makes progress with ReSTIR PT

Practical Info

This is a weekly video chat meeting for planning and discussion of Blender rendering development. Any contributor (developer, UI/UX designer, writer, …) working on rendering in Blender is welcome to join and add proposed items to the agenda.

For users and other interested parties, we ask to read the meeting notes instead so that the meeting can remain focused.
