2024-03-11 EEVEE/Viewport Module Meeting

Practical Info

This is a weekly video chat meeting for planning and discussion of Blender EEVEE/viewport module development. Any contributor (developer, UI/UX designer, writer, …) working on EEVEE/viewport in Blender is welcome to join.

For users and other interested parties, we ask to read the meeting notes instead so that the meeting can remain focused.

EEVEE

  • [#118903 - EEVEE-Next: Viewport pixel size with up-scaling - blender - Blender Projects] Viewport pixel size is being added. Still work in progress. It allows users to render the viewport on a lower resolution what is then upscaled to the final resolution. The upscaled result is close to what is normally draw as the upscaling is happening on samples (not pixels). Currently investigating why shadows are pixelated, how screen space effects should be handled.
  • Horizon scan optimiation is still in progress. Performance uplift is very noticeable. Due to the usage of spherical harmonics it might also be possible to reduce the resolution of the horizon scan without visible artifacts.
  • Work continued on polishing shadows. Some experiments are done to improve the LOD selection.
  • There is a platform limitation when using the Metal Backend on Intel iGPUs. In this case the film accumulation step isn’t working due to unsupported image access for the Intel iGPUs.
  • Upcoming weeks more attention to fix Blender 4.1 issues as well.
  • We also need to start working on the release notes. At least to document behavior differences between EEVEE and EEVEE-Next. Would also help in classifying bugs and helping users.
