Animation Workshop Planning

Disclaimer: Sybren is taking notes while ill with corona, so some detail is lost in the brain fog. Most of the effort went into creating a workshop structure.

The goal of this meeting is to come up with a planning and a way of working for the Character Animation Workshop (24-26 october).

  • UI module might get involved. There is a UI workshop happening at the same time.
  • Jason: with Premo (Dreamwork’s animation software, which Jason helped to design) we split up into smaller teams, to do deep-dives on specific topics. After such discsusions the team leads would organise & present the findings to each other.
    • Sarah: we could look into a dopesheet team, a graph editor team, animation toolbelt team.
    • Sybren is afraid this’ll focus too much on incremental improvements to already-existing structures, instead of something wildly new.
    • Sybren: we could split up into animation vs. rigging? Might also not be too useful of a split, though.
  • Sybren: we do not have to go too deep into the technical details. The goal of the workshop is just on the functional level: what kind of workflows is Blender going to support? What is character animation going to look like? Of course we have to have some idea of whether it’s technically feasible to begin with, but we don’t need to give into details.
    • Charles: we need a safe word for going too deep in tech side. He suggests “Nerd”.
    • Nate: “Apple”.
    • Jason : “Pineapple” was used for this when working on Premo.
    • Will likely become a fruit (just like Blender Studio project codenames!)
  • We should have a team of people working on UI mockups, while discussions are going. Sarah wants to help to create these mockups.
    • Which tool to use? Mira? Figma? Mural? Penpot?
    • Jeremy will set up something.

Syncing up with online/remote teams

Regular online meetups to sync with the online team.

  • morning
  • after lunch
  • evening

Remote teams can continue working during our night, can propose stuff in sync meetings. Videos, no more than 5 minutes.

  • Open up a google drive, where ppl can plonk things.
  • Jeremy: have examples ready.
  • Jason: we need a sign-up sheet, where people can share things beforehand
  • Sybren will set up such a sign-up sheet.

Next Meeting

The next meeting will be on Thursday 13 October, 17:00-19 CEST (Your local time: 2022-10-23T15:00:00Z).

During that meeting, we’ll go over the What’s stopping you from animating in Blender? document, to categorise & group the responses.

Again it will be open for everybody who’s interested. The provisionary meeting agenda will be linked in the #animation-module channel before the meeting.
