'n' tab - shrinking mitigation / usability. Options and where to start in the code

For many addons, or small screen, the ‘n’ tab row shrinks the tabs, worst case to single characters, and becomes tricky to use. I was wondering what options might be best to handle this and where to start poking in the code.
