It creates a 3d shape of your choosing and selects stuff inside it. Sometimes there is one single mesh and you just have to select a certain region but manual selecting faces is ridiculous and using xray+ box select selects stuff underneath or behind the desired face. A volume select can help a lot. It inserts a shape say a Cube and you can place it over your desired area and it selects that part
