Is 2.8 baking physics differently than in 2.79?

I have a rig with bones constrained to softbody objects. Once I play through an animation, the physics are automatically baked, so the next time I hit play and move the rig around (to see adjustments in parameters), the bake takes over and plays the previous movement, ignoring the current input…

in 2.79 I can hit play, shake the rig around to see how parameter changes affect the sim, stop the anim, make changes, play again - no problem.

Also, in 2.79 I can move the rig around without starting the animation and the physics will respond to movement. This doesn’t happen in 2.8
