Blender 2.8 Wireframes Discussion

Here are a few screenshots of how wireframes are showing up on my computer. Not sure if any of you’ve had this issue. If you have, and have any fixes for it, please let me know. The only way I’ve been able to sort of “fix it” is by increasing the clipping start setting. This, however, isn’t really an option because the model is quite small, so the clipping gets in the way.

Edit mode in vertex mode, but it happens in edge and face mode as well

Right now no, I don’t think there’s a direct solution – the problem is caused because the shader manually applies a small offset so that vertices are shaded above the surface instead of clipping through it (though it’s still not perfect even after that; it used to be worse: Blender 2.8 viewport quality in edit mode - feedback)

One workaround you might be able to try is to model on a proxy object. Just as many VFx studios already model at 1/10th scale for their scenes / large props, in your case you need to model at 10x scale. Alt-D duplicate your mesh. Scale that duplicate up and model on that one… then ensure that works acceptably on your original object. I say might and acceptably because you wont be able to apply-scale on that duplicate which means certain mesh ops may skew (a uniform scale of 10,10,10 shouldn’t have many issues though). If that fails, you’ll have to model the base object at some higher scale in the first place: i.e. model at a larger scale and then alt-d duplicate / scale-down for your final scene placement; this way you can continue to make changes to the mesh at a base 1,1,1 scale and have it reflected at its true size later.

I was afraid there wasn’t going to be one. I appreciate your suggestion, though. I will give it a shot, hopefully it’ll work. Let’s just hope it gets sorted out, because it’s quite annoying.

I wish there was an option in the preferences to select between 2.7x and 2.8 wireframes.

Yeah I posted this months ago, when my face dots were appearing on top of the front faces… I thought they had solved this (I didn’t open my file to check) but apparently not.

the current wireframe really looks terrible
Everywhere is a blur, antialiasing, large thickness edge, it is impossible to work
Why did it have to be done, for who?
I hope they fix it

Hello every one! Can any body tell me where to switch bone in wireframe mode, It’s not working for me. As seen in mage it doesn’t work the way it was in 2.7

Share it on the Papercuts, this is important!

So far there is no wireframe mode for bones… tiat´s a pity, I hope they get it back.

Cheers.

I lost the multisampling in the viewport. And also the wires in edge mode are not thicker anymore.
Is the wire mode being reworked right now?
Or is it my system?

Can anyone confirm this:

My spec:
Slackware Linux
Radeon rx480 + opensource drivers (+opencl from amd)

I really do hope they’re working on the wireframes. It needs a lot of love.

For me the wireframes look smooth in object mode but not in edit mode with multisample on.
I don’t use multisample, and now that edges aren’t thicker anymore it looks exactly like 2.79 (A good thing imo)

Did I do something or did they bring back the old wireframe for edit mode? Now everything looks great!!!

update: I spoke too soon… the face dots are all over the place :frowning:

Yes, Clément is refactoring the wireframe draw code. He’s been doing it the last couple of days.

Fantastic!!! Thank you for this!

Oh hallelujah! I’m so glad to see the lines of 2.79 come back. The clean, multi-sampled edges look great for showing off your wireframe, but for working on the actual model, it was the worst. Thank you Clément!

YES! YES!
Clément, thank you for that!

I don’t know… I think version 2.8 was better. So smooth… Perhaps a setting for the thickness of the wireframe would be appropriate for everyone. ( I think… )

For example:
wireidea

Or… something…

The wires were nice, but here is a very practical application that I’ve been struggling with until now:

Is that middle edge completely vertical or leaning to the left a little? Well with the new wireframe rendering it’s super easy to tell.

And your idea for a 2.7x wire is pretty good!

Wireframes do look much nicer now, thanks Clément

(Well, maybe the aliasing could be improved a bit in some cases but otherwise it looks great)
