Blender 2.8 UI/Radial Menu/Shelves

Hello,

I’m totally new to this community and this is my first post. It’s been under a week and I have been trying to get accustomed to Blender 2.8. I have been using Maya since 2007 for modeling purposes and have become really fast at modeling. For UV, I switch to Headus UV Pro & Corona for Max when it comes to shading, lighting & rendering.

Blender has come a long way and I really do want to take the leap of faith and switch to it for everything! That said, I find that Blender slows my modeling process even with the hotkeys. I would really love to see the devs incorporate the right-click shortcut radial menus that pop up in Maya when in different editing modes (Vertex, Edge,Face,Object). I have everything I need at my fingertips with the radial menu and very rarely do I have to reach out for the keyboard (except for changing modes - Scale/Rotate/Transform/Repeat Last) or the tool bars in Maya on the top and left. Even the addition of a permanent shelf in blender would help a lot. The pie menu comes quite close to the radial menus in Maya but lacks multi-level functions like in Maya.

That is one of the reasons I have shied away from modeling in 3DS Max unless absolutely necessary. Because Max too doesn’t have radial menus and the existing menu bars are overwhelming. The only time I reach out to Max is when I have to use advanced functions like Array mesh etc which is rare.

I hope the devs show some love to the modeling artists out there. The flexibility to create/edit radial menus/shelves in future Blender versions will be a major upgrade and something that will convince Maya modelers like me to take the plunge for good.

To summarize -

  1. Radial menus like Maya or customizable pie menus with multiple levels
  2. While splitting faces with cut tools, a visual numerical representation of the % of cut would be helpful. Currently it just snaps at 5/10% increments but they are not visually displayed along the edge like in Maya
  3. Introduction of permanent Shelves for always-on screen shortcuts for different tabs (Modeling/Texturing/Lighting etc)
  4. An option where the 3D cursor moves automatically along with the object (even while invisible).

That’s all I can think of at the moment. Will post more as I keep upgrading myself in Blender.
